When the Body comes to Therapy - Susie Orbach

Dissociation in the Therapeutic Space: Somatic Empathy and Embodiment- Christiane Sanderson

Opening the Heart - The Application of Love- John Beveridge

Our society today lives in a perpetual state of anxious arousal causing, high blood pressure, Inflammation, heart disease, cancer and addictions, and yet, there has never been a better time to be a sex addict in recovery.

Together with therapies which understand the importance of attachment, what could be more appropriate for sex and love addicts than therapeutic treatments that are based in the body, the arena where ‘acting out’ sought sensation to drown emotional pain?

Psychodynamic therapeutic support can help people coming out of chaos, to create a narrative to find dysfunctional relational dynamics based in core beliefs and shame. The exploration of the patients most secret sexual fantasies can often reveal trauma which has been turned into triumph at the point of orgasm.

I have seen how, in therapy, people can go round and round in an old story of shame and despair that makes it seem impossible to ask for, or expect to receive love. But the ‘story’ is only interesting to the point that it delvers us to the feelings.

Developing a non-compulsive sexuality may lack the drama and the intensity of hyper-stimulation. It can take time to lower the hedonic threshold and to bring emotions within the window of tolerance. I want to explore how we can help ourselves, and our patients, make friends with our nervous systems. I call what we do, “the application of Love”.

Somatic Experiencing therapies are, from moment to moment, about establishing and maintaining safety,.

Trauma, that once was locked or frozen in the body in unconscious defensive postures, can then be released as energy, creativity and vitality. This creates more freedom to love and be loved, to explore, and to “thrive, not just survive.”
